During the course you will learn the main handbuilding techniques (pinching, coiling and slab building), how to control clay in its different stages (plastic, leather hard, bone hard) and finally, you will learn to give your final touch by glazing your pieces in a unique coherent set.
Next session: March
Dates: 10/03, 17/03, 24/03, 31/03 from 19:00-21:00
Program of the course:
Week 1: Setting intention & Handbuilding
We begin by creating the foundation for your collection. Through conversation, inspiration images, memories and intution, we will define the atmosphere and story behind your tableware. Then you will dig your hands into clay and start shaping your first two cups using piching and/or coiling techniques.
Week 2: Handbuilding & Refining
We continue the workshop by handbuilding two plates or two bowls according to your personal preference. We will also work on refining the texture of our previous pieces.
Week 3: Completing the collection
This week, you will have the opportunity to create a unique piece that will complement your series – a salad bowl, a breadserving dish or little chopstick holders? Anything that makes sense with your story. You will also have the time to catch up on any pieces you didn’t manage to finish in the previous sessions. After your pieces will be bisqued fired.
Week 4: Glazing session
This week, you will learn the difference between engobes and glazes and how to work with them.
and brush on glazes to finalise your set of tableware.
At the end of the 4 weeks you will leave with a deeper understanding of clay and your own personal tableware collection.
This course is open to beginners as well as people who already have some experience with clay. Everyone works at their own rythm, what matters the most is curiosity and learning through making.
Over the weeks, you will create your small personal tableware collection: 2 cups, 2 bowls or 2 plates and a final piece of your choice. In the last week, you will learn to glaze your collection with a food-safe glaze so you can use your pieces in your home.
Because ceramics needs time. The rythm lets you really understand the material and work with the drying process, which is so essential to ceramics. In this way, you can build a collection that is intentional and refine it over the different sessions.
You are always welcome to bring photos of works that inspire you, so we can discuss the shapes, colors and styles that you tend towards. We never copy other artists work, but we can use them as a starting point to understand our own choices.
